Hearth is built by one person. If something is broken, confusing or just wrong, the fastest way to a fix is to write to me.

Common questions

Do I need an account?

No. The first time you open Hearth, it makes an anonymous account for your phone, with no email and no password. Sign in with Apple is optional; it only helps you move to a new phone.

How does my partner join?

On the Family tab, tap Invite someone, then share the link, show the QR code or AirDrop it. An invite works for 7 days, once. Your partner opens it on their iPhone, joins as the person you made the invite for (or as someone new, if you made it for no one) and sees the same budget. No account, no password.

I have a new phone. How do I get our budget back?

If you added Sign in with Apple, sign in on the new phone. If you didn't, a new phone link brings you back as the same person, with everything you logged, and signs the old phone out. If you still have the old phone, open the Family tab on it and tap Send a new phone link on your own row; if you don't, ask your household's owner to tap Send a new phone link on your row. If you are the owner and the old phone is gone, another adult can invite you back as someone new, and we can move the ownership to you by hand if you write to us. If you were the only adult and never signed in with Apple, the budget can't be recovered on a new phone, so it's worth adding Sign in with Apple.

What happens to what I say?

Speech is turned into words on your iPhone, and the audio never leaves it. Only the words go to our server, which has our AI provider, Anthropic, read them into entries, and then discards them; only the entries are kept. The details are in the privacy policy.

Voice isn't working.

Check that Hearth may use the microphone and speech recognition: open the iPhone Settings app and tap Hearth. Hearth recognises speech on the phone itself; if this iPhone can't, Hearth says so, and typing does everything voice does.

Can we use more than one currency?

Your family has one main currency, and the budget is kept in it. Say an amount in another currency, like "museum tickets 20 euros", and Hearth converts it at that day's rate and keeps the original amount and the rate on the entry.

Two of us changed the same entry. Which one wins?

Neither, silently. Hearth shows both versions and asks which to keep. New entries never clash; only two edits of the same entry can.

Does Hearth connect to my bank?

No. Hearth never moves money, never asks for bank passwords and never reads balances. You tell it what you spent. A later update will add optional ways to catch spending you forget to say, like Apple Pay taps and forwarded receipts, each off until you turn it on.

What does the Family plan cost?

$49.99 a year after a 14-day free trial, or $6.99 a month. One subscription covers every phone in the household. If it lapses, your family can still see, type and export everything; voice pauses.

How do I cancel?

Open the iPhone Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then Hearth. Cancelling stops the next renewal, and the plan keeps working until the end of the period you paid for, or the end of the free trial.

How do we export or delete our data?

On the Family tab, Export everything gives a CSV file of every entry, whenever you like once your household has started the plan or its trial, even after it lapses. Delete household, for the owner, deletes it for everyone. Delete my account removes you: if other adults remain, the household stays with them and your past entries stay with the family. If you set up Hearth but never started the Family plan or its trial, or stopped partway through setup, write to hello@sayhearth.com and we will delete everything: it leaves our active systems within 30 days.

Something's broken, or I have an idea.

Write to hello@sayhearth.com with what you did, what you expected and what happened, and your iOS version. Screenshots help. Every email is read by the person who makes Hearth.
